Mic'ing the kick drum inside and out
- Well, we have drummer David Frenz here to help us get some more sounds. And we'll start with the kick drum. It's the foundation of a rock track, for the most part. It's one of the most important sounds. It's one of the most difficult sounds to get on the drum kit, I think. In this case we've got a 24-inch kick drum with a hole in the head so we can get a bit of attack by putting in a dynamic mike inside the drum. You'll see this in most sessions these days, having an inside mike and an outside mike allows you to balance getting attack from the inside of the drum with a little bit of a tone from the outside of the drum. The interesting thing about this, is the way the two mikes will interact. So, you know, we're going to have two mikes on the same source not very far apart, which by standard miking philosophy is sort of illegal. You know, if we go by the 3-to-1 mike rule, which is to say that for every distance from a source, the two microphones should be three times that distance…
