Panning and creating the stereo field

- Before I get into specific sounds on each drum, and each microphone, I like to figure out where I'm going to pan all of these elements. Panning is where you position a particular track in the stereo field, anywhere from left through to the center all the way to the right. We do that with out pan pots here. So we only have two speakers to deal with but we're still looking to figure out how we can get more depth to our mix, to make it sound like something is coming from behind the speakers, or something's coming right at our face. Now, when we recorded these tracks, we have some stereo souces and we have some mono sources. Some of the stereo sources are the overheads, and the room mics, so those are stereo pairs that create a picture of, in the case of the overheads, the drumkit, and in the case of room, the ambience in front of the drumset and around the drumset.
