- At some point in the process of collaboration you're going to want to have an open and frank discussion with your collaborators about the percentages that each person is going to have in the song or the copyright, as we call it. Now here's a little something that I learned in my years of writing songs. My assumption is that anything that you sit down in a room and start from scratch with another collaborator, and from scratch also kind of means if somebody just brings in a little snippet of an idea, that's an even split, that means it's 50/50 if there are two of you, and 33 1/3 percent for each of the three of you if there are three, etcetera, etcetera. Here's my thinking behind this. Without the people involved in the room at that moment that actual song doesn't exist. So I feel personally that it is bad karma, and frankly a little exhausting, to count words and try and figure out who created what when the song is done, and then try to adjust the percentages.
