- I thought it might be helpful for a few of you out there who haven't done a lot of collaboration for you to hear a little bit about how I got started doing it, because when I first started writing songs, first of all I didn't live in a major music city, and all of the planets had to line up, and everything had to be just right. I had to have the exact proper dinner, and maybe a song would come to me. In other words, I was very very careful, and heaven help me a little bit precious about the process when I first got started writing songs, and I probably wrote my first 15 songs entirely by myself. At which point I decided I wanted to take this seriously and I moved to Nashville, and Nashville is the home of collaboration. It is what they do there, they do it all day every day all the time, and so once I got there and I'd been there for a little while I wrote a few more songs by myself, and then I realized everybody was co-writing and so I figured I'd give it a try.
