- I think it's important to remember that song writing, like all art is subjective. For every hit song that follows these rules, there will be one that breaks them. My hope is not that you follow every rule that I've talked about. But that when you break one of these rules, you're doing it on purpose. Making song writing decisions from a place of knowledge is a much better way to go. As my friend John Tirro in Nashville told me years ago, "Every one in a while, you're going to screw up and write a good song." What he meant was, sometimes we can write well without even necessarily knowing why. But I would suggest that by knowing what works and what doesn't, you can more consistently write songs that you're proud of. And ultimately have the kind of commercial success you're hoping for.
