- [Instructor] You've probably hard mention, either in sports or in any sort of creative endeavor, about being in a flow state. Well, this definitely applies to songwriting. Really the most important thing when you sit down to write is to write and not edit, just keep going. There will always be time to edit later, but the most important thing is to preserve that flow state, preserve your momentum, and just write until you feel like you've gotten what I refer to as your arms around the whole song. At that point, you can back off a little bit, take a deep breath, or a break, and edit then.
