- [Instructor] So it would be really easy to do about 10 whole consecutive courses on gain staging. It's really the grammar of mixing, as a mentor of mine once put it. But I want to address it specifically as it pertains to the mix bus, because it's really important to keep that in mind as you're mixing, but also as you approach your mix bus processing. So when I play back this mix, I'm going to jump to, like, one of the loudest parts, which is inevitably going to be a chorus for this type of tune. And maybe you're reinventing the wheel. Hey, maybe your chorus is the quietest part. Who's to judge? Let's take a listen to this, and let's take a look at where we're hitting the meters. In Pro Tools, when I'm mixing in the box, I really like to have my mix bus meter just off to the side, targeted so that I can see it, or un-targeted, however they like to put that, and I can see how much headroom I have.
