- In this movie, we'll look at portable mixers, which, expand your options. Sometimes on a shoot, it makes sense to add a mixer to the signal flow. Now the question on your mind is probably, why use a mixer? Can't I go from the microphone right into the camera or audio recorder? And the answer is yes, you can, but a mixer bill give you several choices on location that you might want to have available. As usual, it comes down to planning the shoot carefully, and considering your options based on what you intend to shoot. If, for example, you are shooting one person talking, then a mixer may not be necessary. But if it's two people talking, where will those two signals from two microphones go? The camera or audio recorder will have two inputs, so you could just plug one mic cable into each input. Then of course you have to set levels on the camera or recorder.
