- Welcome to Capturing Audio for Video, tips and techniques. In this movie, let's talk about what gear you should consider renting, and what you might want to own. The question of what to buy comes up a lot with my students, and I tell them to buy what they need, when they need it. Assuming you live or are shooting somewhere that has a professional rental house, and most cities do, rent everything until you really need to own something. This saves a fortune in cash, of course, and it also keeps the gear you're using current. Here's an important tip: if you're fortunate enough to be shooting for a client with a budget, then charge them for the gear you rent, plus a small profit. You should make money on the rental. It's a proper and expected practice to do so. Of course, if you have a budget, you should really be hiring a sound professional, and they'll take care of the gear for you.
