- In this movie, I'll show you one microphone choice you should always consider. When you're about to record anything, you need to decide what microphone to use, and that decision will have a major impact on the success of the recording. Professionals keep a mic cabinet that holds several, or even dozens of choices. The best-sounding microphone, and the one used most often on professional shoots is a high-quality shotgun. That's the mic you often see on movie sets mounted on the end of a long pole called the boom, or a fishpole, and pointed at the actors. If you have a crew, specifically a sound person on your shoot, then that's the arrangement that will usually get you the best sound. Good shotguns are inherently better microphones than most lavaliers. And a mic mounted on a boom allows for more flexibility, better microphone placement, and fewer problems.
