The talking head

- In this movie, I'll show you two excellent ways to capture the sound of a talking head. On the chance you haven't heard that term, it refers to a close up camera shot of someone or something in this case talking directly to camera. There. Now, I'm a talking head. Notice that a talking head is a closeup or perhaps a medium closeup so usually you'll want a closeup sound. It's an intimate shot so try to capture an intimate sound. Sound professionals are happy to record this sort of thing because the camera angle means they can get a microphone into an ideal position and the talent is mostly stationary. Much easier to record someone if they're not moving around. Because you can get in close, choose your best sounding microphone. This is probably your shotgun. Your sound person could hold it in place for you or might even put it on a mic stand if the talent doesn't move their head around too much. An ideal position for the shotgun would be about here. Good. About 12 to 18 inches away…
