About automatic parcel creation

- [Instructor] As we begin this chapter on Parcels, let's take a look at the unique way in which Civil 3D creates parcels. The way it works is that a parcel is created when several parcel segments intersect to create a closed shape. Currently, on my screen, I've got four lines, these are just AutoCAD lines, they are not yet parcel segments. I'm going to convert them into parcel segments. Go to my Parcel menu, and we'll select Create Parcel from objects. This is a command we'll cover again, in an upcoming video. I'll just select my four line segments and press Enter. I've got some settings that will be applied when any new parcels are created. I'll just select the defaults. What I've done is I've created four new parcels segments based on those lines, and the lines have been removed. So you'll see when I click on one of these, the contextual tab indicates that this is a parcel segment. And if I go into properties, you'll see that it lists it as a parcel segment there. So this is a special kind of Civil 3D object, called a Parcel Segment, you may have also noticed that a label appeared in the center and if I click on that label, you'll see that that is a parcel. So I've got a parcel segment and a parcel. But I didn't create this parcel, it was created automatically and indirectly, because these four segments intersect and create a closed shape. If I were to break that somehow, let's say, grab this segment and open up that parcel, it disappears, the labels disappeared, and that parcel no longer exists in the drawing. In fact, if I go into prospector and look under sites, site one and parcels, you'll see that there are no parcels listed. But if I were to close this back up, let's refresh that. You'll see that I now have a parcel number 260 in the drawing. And then I can add additional segments to make more parcels. Maybe not by converting things in the drawing but by actually launching some parcel tools. And this is another command we'll talk about later. But with freeform create, I can quickly create parcel geometry and as I do so, I'm intersecting with other parcel objects and creating more parcels. And again, these parcels are created as a result of a closed shape existing because other parcels segments intersect with each other. So there you have it one more time. A parcel is created when several parcel segments intersect to form a closed shape.
