- What is a surface? And why is it important to civil 3D? Let's discuss. A surface is a 3D representation of a patch of ground. In fact, if I were to click on one of these contours, right click and pick object viewer, you can see that the contours actually represent a three-dimensional object, that is our surface. Now this surface looks a bit irregular because it's representing existing ground. But if we were to take a look at the surface down here, we would see something a little more uniform because it represents proposed ground. Here we can see, the road and the lots adjacent to the road. A surface is most often built using a triangular irregular network or tin. Let's see what that looks like.
