Apply parcel styles

- [Instructor] Now that you've learned all about creating parcels, let's move to displaying and annotating them. We'll begin with controlling the appearance of parcels using styles. To get started, I'll zoom into this large parcel near the center of our project, and I'll click the parcel area label style to select the entire parcel. With the parcel selected, I'll go up here to the ribbon and select parcel properties. I'll simply change the object style from standard to, in this case, adjoiner. And you'll notice when I click OK, it changes the outline of the parcel. You'll see that the line type has changed and the color is black or dark gray. So let's take a look at a different example. This parcel here, called standard six, represents the right-of-way for our project. So I'll select the parcel as I've done before, pick parcel properties, and change the object style to ROW for right-of-way. Here, we'll see the outline of the parcel change again to a purple color and a different line type pattern. Now, the next two areas I'd like to do are this one and this one. Now, if I'm going to change the style of two parcels, I can't use the parcel properties command because it will only allow me to work on one parcel at a time. I can however, use the AutoCAD properties command, and you'll see it up here on the ribbon. So I'll choose that, and then where it says style, I'll simply change it to the one I want to use, which in this case is open space. When I make that change, I'll press escape to deselect the parcels, and you can see there's a pretty dramatic change here with the green color and the hatching. So where's that all coming from? Let's take a look inside of a style to see what's making those changes happen. I'll select the parcel, go up here to the parcel properties drop down, and pick edit parcel style. Parcel styles are pretty simple. You'll notice here on the display tab there are only two components, the parcel segments and the parcel area fill. And typically, the right approach is to just use your standard layers to control things like color, line type, and that sort of thing, and that's exactly what we're doing here. You'll notice that each one of these has been placed on its own layer. You'll notice that a certain layer is being used for the segments and the area fill, and that's where the green color and the line type is coming from. You'll also notice that the parcel area fill itself, the pattern has been assigned here as well as the angle and scale. So that's where the change in the outline and the change in the hatching is coming from, primarily this display tab. There's some other settings, like for example, on the design tab, you can add a fill distance so that the hatching doesn't go the whole way out to the edges. So there's another tab to control how parcels look in sections. But for the most part, you're going to go here to change anything that you want to change about the appearance of the parcel. Next let's do this narrow easement right here. So I'll select the parcel area label. Once again, I'll go up to parcel properties and I'll change the area this time to easement. And you can see there's a different hatch pattern, different outline for that style. Now for the last thing I'd like to do is we've got all of these individual lots here, and I would like to assign a style to them called lot, but I want to do it in the most efficient way possible. So I could go through and I could select each one individually like this, but even that's a little tedious. I don't want to really do that. So is there a quicker way? There is, and I'll show it to you now. If I go to prospector and browse under sites, our site for these lots is called lot layout, and then if I expand parcels, we can see all the parcels listed there. Now, if I pick parcels, we'll also see the parcels listed down here in this bottom viewing area. Make sure that this button is pushed in and that show preview is turned on, or you won't see that information. Okay, so what we want to do now is we want to select all of the parcels that have this standard style, that's what's currently assigned to them. So we'll scroll over to the style column and we'll sort by that column. And as I move to the top and then scroll down, you'll see that all of the standard styles are grouped together. Now yours may be at the bottom or at the top, mine happen to be at the top. So they're kind of arranged in reverse alphabetical order. So now all I need to do is pick one at either end of the list, the bottom or the top. I'll pick the bottom one since that's where I'm at, I'll scroll up to the top, and then hold my shift key down and pick the top one. And that in effect selects all of the ones that have the standard style currently assigned. Now here's the trick. What I do next is I right-click on the style column heading and pick edit. That gives me a little dialog box where I can change the style to whatever I want. I'll pick lot and click OK, and that's going to go through all those parcels and very efficiently change all of their styles to the lot style. And you can see the blue partially dashed line that is used for that style. So that's how you control the display of parcels using styles. Now, what happens if adjacent parcels with different styles share one or more common segments? We'll cover that in the next video.
