Understand alignments
- [Instructor] Before we jump in and begin working with alignments, let's talk a little bit about what they are and what they do. Alignments are the backbone of all your linear designs in Civil 3D. Roads, pipelines, railways, walls, I even once used an alignment to design a ski slope for a popular resort in Pennsylvania. As you'll learn, we look at these linear designs kind of one dimension at a time. First in plan view, then profile view, and then section view. Alignments represent the plan or 2D view of your linear design. If we look at our drawing here, we've got a corridor object that represents the three-dimensional design of Jordan Court. But right here at the heart of it is the alignment, and that's where the design starts. The alignment also provides the stationing that's needed to express where you are along the linear feature, whether you're out in the field or paging through a stack of plan and profile sheets in the office. In this chapter, you'll learn how to create, edit, and analyze alignments. So go on and click the next video to get started.
