Understand parcels

- [Instructor] In some projects, especially residential subdivision projects, we need to create and manage property boundaries. This is handled in Civil 3D through objects called parcels and parcel segments. Parcels are unique in Civil 3D in the way that they're created and in the way that they behave. For example, on my screen I've got four line segments that are kind of randomly drawn. And if I convert those line segments into parcel segments something magical happens. When they form a closed shape a parcel is automatically created by Civil 3D. So again, what I have here are four parcel segments that just happen to interact in such a way that they form a closed shape. And Civil 3D automatically recognizes that closed shape and creates a new object from it called a parcel. Complete with a label indicating its area. And if I make an edit to one of these segments to disrupt that area you can see that the parcel disappears. And if I put it back the way it was, the parcel appears once again. With this approach we can form closed shapes from existing boundaries, right of way lines, and geometry that we create as we design. And that results in a parcel layout that's created efficiently and accurately using the tools that Civil 3D provides. And in this chapter, you'll learn how to use those tools and some techniques to create parcels efficiently and accurately. You'll get started in the next video by creating parcels from existing objects.
