What is a Civil 3D corridor?

- [Instructor] As we begin to look at corridors, it's important to know what a Civil 3D corridor is, and when Autodesk first came out with Autodesk Civil 3D, corridors were the premier feature of the software. The ability to create a 3D model of a corridor. We're just breaking down the corridor in a simple way. A corridor is anything that follows a linear path. You can apply a typical section to that path. And so oftentimes, we see with corridors different classes, tutorials, videos, is being applied to a roadway. And that's what we're going to be doing in our exercises as well. You'll see on the screen right now a corridor that's made up of a roadway cul de sac, intersection, and other roadways tying it. But ultimately, a corridor is simply a linear path design that follows a typical section. You can use corridors for all kinds of different things: roadways, linear ditches. I've seen some use corridors for the creation of ponds and pond design. After all, a pond section is a typical section that follows a linear path, the bottom of the pond. Others use corridors to design and grade parking lots. So don't lock yourself down on believing that corridors are just for those who design roadways. We're talking about simply a typical section that can be applied to a linear path. And it doesn't have to be a straight line either when we talk about linear path. Well if it's a linear path, we need some type of linear path to draw that typical section on. That linear path in Civil 3D is either an alignment and profile combined, or a feature line, which we have not discussed yet. We'll discuss soon. In both cases, that provides us the X, the Y, and the Z linear path controls that we need. Additionally, you need the typical section to apply to that linear path. So in the drawing that I have opened if I pan to the left, you'll see those typical sections drawn for us. These sections in Civil 3D are called assemblies. So we're going to create an assembly in one of our videos. That assembly comes together and is applied at a specific frequency along that linear path creating that 3D model. So you need those elements in the drawing before you can create a corridor object. Your linear path, either an alignment and profile, or a feature line, and you need the assembly. Let's talk a little bit about an assembly.
