- Coordinate systems should be assigned to all DWG files. Although non-geographic files, for example data inserted at 0,0, don't really require a coordinate system, most data used within AutoCAD Map 3D does require one. There are approximately 4,000 coordinate systems to choose from and you can even create your own. Let's assign a coordinate system to the hydrology.dwg under chapter 12, 12_01. So open that up, and here's the hydrology drawing. Now if you're not sure what coordinate system it's in, normally when I receive one I ask around. In fact, I rarely accept any drawings from people if I don't have the metadata or information about the coordinate system. It's really critical. Now I could guess, and there's a technique to guessing. What I can do is I can go to this menu option down here, the customization, line-line-line, at the very bottom. You see the stack.
