Connecting to raster surfaces

- [Instructor] Raster surfaces, also known as elevation models, store the 3D coordinates of a surface of the earth. These surfaces can be added and combined into a single layer. Adding a surface to the map is best viewed in 3D mode and will automatically drape all the vector-based GIS layers over top of it. Let's add a DEM now. In our drawing, GUELPH.dwg, we're going to add a new dataset. So under Data, Connect to Data, under Add Raster Image or Surface Connection, this is going to be a surface connection. We're going to change this name to GUELPH_DEM. Now like the shape files, we have two choices. We have a single DEM file or a folder of DEM files. In this case, we're going to find a folder. So I'm going to click Browse. We're going to go into 07_03, and there's a directory in there called DEM. Let's pick on that. So it should be in your Exercise Files, Chapter 7, 07_03/DEM.
