Creating a palette

- [Narrator] Let's create a brand new palette, shall we? First, let's explain what a palette is. What a palette is, is a great place to store all of your typical text styles, dimension styles, and reader styles. Also, it's an awesome place to store all of you favorite blocks and even commands. Each palette is actually added to a palette group. In this video, I'd like to create a new palette group, then a new palette. Then I'd like to investigate some of the properties. So to get started, I'm going to jump in to Civil 3D. Now, I've already associated my civil template with my queue new command, so up here on the quick access toolbar, I'm just going to click on the new button right here. It's going to open up my new drawing. Now, you may or may not have tool palettes already loaded on, so I'll just close out of mine and assume that you don't. To get our tool palettes dialog, what I'd like to do is go to home panel, then notice down here, we have a little tool palettes button; you can also hit control three to activate that. So go ahead and click on tool palettes. Now, mine comes in automatically docked, so what I'll do is I'll drag mine out from being docked and mine's sitting out here like this. There's a couple different ways these can be. If I dock mine here, it can stay static. The problem is, we need to get to some properties over here, so it's tough. So if we hover over this little palette and if we click on this little button right here, we can select it. And what's going to happen is it's going to be a fly out. Now, to control that, if we come over to this bar, what I'd like to do is right click. Notice that we set it for allow docking and it's anchored left. If I click off of that, it'll dock away. Now, I'm not sure what the default is, but what we're going to do is we're going to create a new palette. So what I'd like to do is just go ahead and right click on the bar right here. Let's select new palette. For the new palette, I'm going to call it custom palette, and I'm just going to hit enter. Right now it's blank, but what I want to do is I want to into the properties of the palette before we start building up any tools. To do that, I'm going to right click right here on this bar. Then I'm going to go down to customize palettes. Now we'll see we have custom palettes over here. And it probably added it also to civil metric sub-assemblies. We'll see we have custom palette here. If you right click on custom palette here, just remove it from that group. Now I'm going to right click right here, I'm going to go new group. I'm going to call it company wide standards. And I'm going to hit enter. Now I'm going to select custom palette, and I'm going to drag it over and I'm going to drag it into company wide standards. Now company wide standards, has a custom palette. I'm going to click close. No when we hover over here, the thing is we'll see we're still in civil metric sub-assemblies. I'm going to right click down here where you see these tabs are grouped up. We'll see that these are all the items that are applied to this group. What I'd like to do, is right click here. I want to go to customize palettes. And we probably don't need all those. So what I'm going to do, is I'm going to scroll down to company wide standards, I'm going to select it, I'm going to right click and I'm going to set it current. I'm going to hit close. Now when I come over to my tool palettes company wide standards, we'll see we only have one palette here. What we can do now if I right click, and if I go to new palette. I can rename this, to custom objects. I can hit enter. Now we'll see these are both blank, but they're both added to the group. Again, if I right click here. Go to customize palettes. We're going to scroll up to company wide standards. Now we have two palettes that are added to it. I'm going to delete this one, though. So I'm going to select custom objects. I'm going to right click and I'm going to remove it. And over here, I'm just going to right click, and I'm going to delete it. Yes, I'm sure. Let's click OK. Now let's click close. The cool thing is about this, we don't have to save any drawings or anything like that. It's always going to be there, ready for us to use. This is what's called a global setting.
