What is the neutral zone?

- [Instructor] During this course, you'll hear me mention the term neutral zone. So what is the neutral zone? Well, graphically, it's an area within, let's say a building, in this case, a classroom, where it's marked on a drawing as the N zed, or NZ, the neutral zone. And that area within that space allows you to combat the spread of COVID-19, the coronavirus. I'll explain that a lot more in a lot more detail as we go through the course as well. But just to give you a bit of background, in computer security a perimeter network, or screened subnet is a neutral zone. And it's sometimes known as a DMZ as well. What it does is it contains and exposes any external-facing services to an untrusted network, such as the internet. So if you'll pardon the pun, viruses, hackers, and so on. The whole idea is this neutral zone allows you to assess those viruses, those hackers, and check whether they are threatening to your local area network, your LAN. So it adds that additional layer of security. External networks can only access the neutral zone. The rest of the network is firewalled. So internally, you're safe. External networks can only get as far as the neutral zone before you check things out. And that's why you have this neutral zone in the space in the diagram in the slide. The neutral zone, like in a computer network, is there to detect and address breaches of COVID protocol before they penetrate internally. So the neutral zone in this case, in this drawing, is allowing you to check to make sure that you've addressed all of your COVID guidelines and regulations. Have you got your mask on? Have you sanitize your hands? Are you wearing PPE if you need to wear PPE in your working environment? So the neutral zone is that little area that just allows you to, in essence, assess any threats before you go into the internal area, whether that's a classroom, an office, a factory, a warehousing space, or anything else that you might be working in at that given time.
