- We're moving on to another chapter now in our AutoCAD Essentials Course and we're going to be looking at what is known as xrefs. These are external reference files, often abbreviated to the phrase xref. And what you can do is you can virtually paper clip a drawing onto a host drawing and use it as a reference, hence the term external reference. The major benefit of this is if your referenced drawing, your xref, is a complicated drawing and you're paper clipping it to your host drawing, it is only going to be roughly 10 percent of its original size. It will only make the host drawing about 10 percent bigger instead of obviously doubling the drawing size, for example. So, it's a really useful piece of functionality purely due to file size, but also, it's great because you can reference in other drawings that other people are working on at any given time.
