You've probably heard of Optical Character Reader or OCR. OCR has been in use since many years for data extraction. However, businesses observed that OCR is unable to extract data from all types of documents. Due to this, several employees had to be involved in classification, validation and processing of documents. Thereby, the rate of Straight Through Processing or STP which automates end-to-end processing without human involvement dropped to less than 40%. The challenge was that OCR was unable to address semi-structured data that appeared in machine-generated forms or documents.
