Half and half: Light and not so light

- Photographers and illustrators are pretty much cut from the same cloth. The most accomplished in their individual professions create the most compelling work when they present their subject with the greatest level of originality. They judiciously select the angle and the lighting. They stage the scene so that it will capture the viewer and serve up something that they've not seen before. And as a logo designer, you are given the same challenge. You are illustrating an idea, and by presenting a unique perspective, you can often shift your work from a complacent also-ran into a dynamic solution. Look at these two photos of the Washington Monument. Both good shots, but maybe the shot on the right has a bit more interest since it captured the stronger light play of shadow and highlight. That angle may be responsible for better describing the geometry of the monument for someone unfamiliar with an obelisk. The flat, head-on version is beautiful but frankly it's, well, it's flat.
