- I'm a terrible sucker for a beautiful monogram, and over the last several years, the art of personal aggrandizement has kept many a designer well occupied. Though monograms date back to 350 BC, they met their true Renaissance starting in the mid 18th century. That's about when the family crest we discussed earlier started to give way to a more democratic identifying motif that anyone could develop, regardless of their station in life. Now there's a pretty thin line between a monogram and a letter-based logo. As compelling as most of these monograms are, most were actually developed for a business or a product. By the mid 19th century, catalogs were made available with every three letter combination with multiple iterations of each for embellishment of linen, silver, jewelry, or whatever item would best show off your station in life.
