- You've learned a lot of metrics so far. Now the question is, how do I tie those metrics back to the business strategy? The book, The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance by Becker, Huselid, and Ulrich offers a useful answer, and I've adapted it into a road map. Check out the exercise file to see an example of what your map might look like. Step one is to clearly define the business strategy. This is generally done by leaders. If you can get yourself into those planning meetings, you are poised to make an impact. People will implement the strategy, and you are responsible for performance of those people. You can ensure the strategy is developed with an eye toward how it will be implemented.
