- In this movie, I'm gonna talk about concepts called ratios and proportions. Ratios and proportions are really just about using the relationships between things to solve math problems. Let's start with the ratios. A ratio, really, is just a relationship. I'll give you an example. Let's say that four out of five dentists recommend Trident. We can think of this relationship as a ratio. We call this a part-to-whole ratio because the whole thing is in the example. The five dentists are all of the dentists, and we express this as a fraction, four out of five. That's a part-to-whole ratio. You can see the relationship between the part that recommends Trident to the whole. Another kind of ratio that you're going to see is a part-to-part ratio. Let's say I have a book club. For every two men in the book club, there are seven women. Notice that I don't know anything about the whole in this example. I just have the relationship between one part and another part.
