What does it mean to license your work?

- What does it mean to license something? The easiest way to explain this is by example. We all know that we can't just decide to use Mickey Mouse in our movie without some kind of formal permission from Disney. If, and this is an Everest-sized if, Disney were to give that formal permission, it would take the form of a license. We'll be examining specific terms and conditions more closely in other sections. But, simply put, a licensing agreement is a legal contract between two parties, known as the licensor and the licensee. In this typical licensing arrangement, the licensor grants the licensee the right to produce and sell goods, apply a brand name or trademark or use patented technology owned by the licensor. In general, such a license allows an intellectual property rights holder, the licensor, to make money from an invention or creative work by charging a user, the licensee, for that use.
