When to use each type of license

- So, why would we use license agreement instead of a work for hire or contract arrangement? Really, it depends on what your product, deliverable, or work product is. Here's a handful of examples where a license would be preferable, a film festival, television one-shot, a distribution deal, still photography, music. Think about your product and what makes sense for that product. Here are my recommendations for some of the items presented. For VFX work, these will almost certainly be work for hire. I can't imagine a situation in which a producer or distributor would agree to pay you a license fee for this type of work. A PBS documentary, well unless it was produced for PBS and paid for by PBS, you'd want a license in this situation. Composition of music. This could actually fall on either side of the fence, and I've negotiated both types of contracts for clients. Functionally, it turns on the amount of leverage the parties can apply.
