The lay of the land in HR systems

- When you manage people, you have to manage a lot of data, data about pay, benefits, vacations, sick days, training, performance management, and so much more. Until the mid 80s, unless companies used programs such as SAP or Oracle to help manage some of this data, most HR administration was left to pen, paper, and Excel spreadsheets, a very inefficient way to manage all that data. Human Resource Information Systems also known as Human Resource Management Systems or HRIS, had their beginning when PeopleSoft was launched in 1987. It has since been acquired and is now owned by Oracle. At the time, it was known as an ERP system short for Enterprise Resource Planning. With PeopleSoft's success and ever expanding program abilities, HRIS programs began to flourish. Additional vendors came in beginning in the early 90s and remained focused on mid to large-size organizations. Programs such as Ultimate and Sage Abra come to mind.
