- One of the first things that comes to mind when thinking of going paperless is a scanner. By now, you've seen that the scanner is not the only tool for a paperless system, but it is a very useful one. Scanners come in all shapes, sizes, and capabilities. Let's explore the different types of scanners and their features. The type of scanner you choose is based primarily on the type of document you'll be scanning. Flatbed scanners. For photographs, books, and other items too bulky or too delicate to fit through a feeder, make sure to choose a flatbed scanner. That's one that has a flat glass area, where you place your item to scan. Some features available for flatbed scanners that you may want to look for are high-resolution scanning, transparency adapters to scan negatives and slides, and software that includes photo editing options.
