- I'll admit it, I'm conflict avoidant. I once got off an elevator at the wrong floor just to avoid being trapped with a colleague I knew would continue an argument. But I'm not alone. Research shows that more than half of us would rather ignore conflict than face it head on. So we know conflict has a positive side. It can change old habits, even make a team more creative in the long run. But even when you manage conflict well, there's still that awkward moment when your team gets back together after a blow-up. Are we friends again? Can I smile now? Is she still mad at me? After an argument, your goal is to remind people that the group isn't broken, that they can continue to work together effectively. So use techniques that remind team members what they share. You could simply give the group some flip chart paper and have them write down all the non-work things they have in common.
