- Wayne Gretzky played 20 years in the National Hockey League. When he retired, he held 61 individual performance records, many considered unbreakable. Hockey fans call him The Great One. After retirement, Gretzky became a coach, and it didn't work. He lost more games than he won and his players didn't get better. Gretzky didn't make the transition from player to coach. Moving from being a star performer to managing other people is tough. Let's talk about two big mental shifts that need to happen for the transition to work.
