- We all like to think we have great memories, and hey, maybe you do, but you're still going to want to get into the habit of taking detailed notes as part of managing people. Keeping detailed notes helps you create a record that you can use as guidance to work out why things have gone wrong or hey, why things are going right. These records you keep can also be used as evidence that your report needs to be rewarded when they're going above and beyond. Looking back at my own experience as a manager, taking clear notes has been one of the most useful additions to my approach in management. I once managed somebody who was just reliably over-performing. Every time I checked in with the team, I found she was mentoring someone, teaching someone or also helping her teammates.
