- Albert Einstein is thought to have once said, if I had an hour to solve a problem, I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions. Personally, I would probably carve out five minutes to check my work, but that's just me. The important point is when I have talked to innovators at multi-billion-dollar product firms around the world, problem-solving skills are secondary to problem statement skills. The modern cultural mindset of finding answers quickly is both deceiving and dangerous. When getting to the solution is more important than determining the right problem to solve, details are overlooked, corners are cut and risk is increased. We need look no further than to recent product failures in the pharmaceutical, electric vehicle or commercial aerospace industries to ask what was the problem that they should have focused on.
