- In 2015, some residents in a Queens, New York neighborhood discovered that they suddenly needed to replace their underground water supply pipes, which had become damaged beyond repair. The new pipes, just like the old pipes, were made of copper. Just a few months later, the new pipes were discovered to be damaged beyond repair and had to be replaced again. This cycle repeated for several years, and at great expense to the affected homeowners. The source of the problem was eventually linked to a major telecom provider's conversion of area customers to high-speed fiber optic service. Now, wait a minute. How does a phone company single fiber optic upgrade repeatedly affect water pipes?
