- Early in my experience as a manager, I fell into the trap of coaching people from the hip without really stopping to think about where they were or what they needed or fully understanding how that fit in with what the team needed. It can be tempting to get excited talking with someone about what they can or want to accomplish, but it's vital to make sure that you take the time to fully assess before you start coaching someone. Understanding the four key levels of assessment is going to make your coaching more effective for not just the individual, but for the team and the organization as well. You should start with assessing on an organizational level first.
