- So what if Harvard Business Review called data science the sexiest job of the 21st century? Our jobs are sexy too! We can't all be data scientists, nor should we be. With applied curiosity, we can all make ourselves more valuable by being more data-savvy, and you can become more data-savvy by using three categories of questions. The first category is goal questions. Here you're asking what do you hope to achieve with the data? What's the primary purpose of the data? Goal questions are easier to answer when you consider the two main reasons for collecting data. These are defined by data gurus DalleMule and Davenport as data defense and data offense objectives. Data defense is data that's collected to ensure compliance with regulations, detect fraud, or minimize risk. This is common in highly regulated industries like finance or healthcare.
