Building team trust
- Recently, I was at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia at their brain exhibit. And there I came upon this poster. Which of these three figures is the tallest? Take a look for a moment. Well, the answer is that they are all exactly the same size, but because of the way the lines are drawn and how the picture is framed, our perceptions, and therefore our interpretations, can be skewed. When we're looking at that picture, those lines and the framing can distort our sense of the actual size of the figures or what is true. To me, this is no different than when we interpret another person's actions purely through the lens and framing of our own experiences. And this might distort their true intentions. And let's face it, trust, it's a two-way street. The same thing might be happening in terms of how they interpret your actions. So when it comes to building trust, we must understand the other person's true intentions.…
