- Some people, when they make a pact and they fail, as we all inevitably do, they take it very hard. They find it very difficult to get back on track. The solution to this problem is self-compassion. Studies find that people who are more self-compassionate are more likely to reach their long-term goals. Well how do we cultivate self-compassion? Studies suggest that one technique is to talk to ourselves the way we might talk to a good friend. If I told you about the problem that I had when I became distracted on my phone, when I really wanted to be with my daughter, I'm guessing you wouldn't tell me that I'm a bad father or that there's something wrong with me.
