- When someone sees you at work, what do they think? I mean, do they think you're always available? That it's okay to always walk over to you and interrupt what you're doing? I don't know the answer to that question, though I do know you should be thinking about it. Let's go a step further. It's time for you to start getting proactive about broadcasting your availability. If you don't, people will tend to assume it's okay to interrupt you. I'm not suggesting hiding, constantly saying no to people or finding another way to be unavailable. You can believe in a positive culture and great professional relationships, but still strive to manage how often you're interrupted. So let's think about how we might send the right signal. I'll share one interesting example I've seen use multiple times. Some workplaces use colored cards to express their level of availability. First, they agree on what the colors mean.
