- The words you use are powerful and can convey disrespectful or harmful messages, whether you intend to or not. While the context of many terms used today have adapted over time, their origins often stem from racist or biased viewpoints. Here are simple language changes you can make to be more inclusive. A great place to start is with keeping things gender neutral. When using gender-based language, you're sending subtle messages that the people interacting with you must adhere to that gender binary and they may feel uncomfortable expressing that they identify as gender non-conforming. Instead of using the common guys, try to find an alternative that works for you. I alternate between you all and friends depending on the situation.
