- So that's the end of this section on negotiating a good salary when you're getting a new job. And I think the essence of this process is the courage, the courage to negotiate at all and the courage to ask for quite the high amount of salary. And it's really key to have that courage to realize that if you don't ask, you don't get. You can always trade back down a bit if you have to. But the point is that there's quite a lot of money at stake here. If you can get an extra thousand out of them, you've made 1,000 pounds in one minute and you've not just made 1,000, you've made 1,000 pounds per year, possibly forever. So it's a key moment and it's going to be much harder to get that pay rise once you start. So they are at their weakest when they're trying to recruit you.
