- Let's say both you and your coworker, Amitra, are late for work one morning. Psychologists tell us you'll have very different explanations for why each of you was late. For yourself, you'll blame outside circumstances. Heavy traffic maybe, or a sick child. But for Amitra, you're likely to blame personal attributes. You'll presume she doesn't care about getting to work on time or she's always late because she's inconsiderate of others. This is known as the fundamental attribution error. We're quick to use external situational explanations for our own behavior, but we explain other people's behavior through internal attributes like personality or attitude. It's important to remember this tendency when we're using our DIME model, describe, inquire, manage, and encourage.
