- Managers of today are expected to wax lyrical about the financial inner workings of their organizations. The modern day management accountant must possess a delicate balance of both technical and soft skills, but whose role is it to define the actual information or reporting needs? I truly love this topic, because it's often the subject of ongoing and heated debate. Of our several management accountants, this question over the years, and to them, it's pretty simple. Managers are the ones who run the business, so it's their job to tell me their requirements. But I've also asked many managers the same question, and to them, it's also pretty simple. Management accountants are the ones who have access to all the data, so they should be telling me what they can provide. I've seen this back and forth debate go on for weeks, months, or in one case, years. I like to call it information needs tennis. It can be quite entertaining…
