Developing a balanced management style

- In any team, finding the right balance of control and empowerment is important. In a global team, when we can't see the work that our people are doing or when they may respond differently than we expect due to cultural differences, we need to ensure we get the balance right. If we feel out of control or lack confidence in our people, it's very tempting to increase control, to set up more meetings, approvals, and reviews. Before long, we can find ourselves accidentally falling into micromanagement. Take the opportunity to review the controls you put in place for remote colleagues and compare them with how you work with your face-to-face team members. If there's a difference, consider why this is. Is it a lack of feeling in control, or a lack of confidence in your people?
