Developing criteria
- Whether I'm conducting training on decision-making with undergrads or with professionals, I always start by talking about the importance of structure. I point out that research clearly shows that any structure is going to improve the results. I tell them that even just saying, "All right, everybody, everybody say one thing they like "and one thing they don't, "and then we're going to vote on the options." That alone increases the quality of the final decision by leaps and bounds. I then go through a few models they can use and then give them a decision-making activity. And do you know what 80% of those groups do? They jump right in without putting any structure in place? I think people just naturally want to start solving the problem.
