- Sometimes, we can feel uncomfortable receiving feedback. Sometimes, we can feel embarrassed, blindsided, or even angry, but it's important to be self-aware of the way that we receive feedback. Don't get defensive. Too often, we can downgrade feedback for one reason or another, which discourages continued feedback, and this brings me to another important element of performance feedback. When you receive feedback, thank the messenger, and then act appropriately. Don't get defensive. Don't defend or downgrade compliments and encouraging feedback. If someone compliments your clothes, don't dismiss it to a sales product from an off-brand store. Don't dismiss your photography skills to the camera or your stellar performance to just good luck. It will discourage continued feedback and downplay yourself all at the same time. When receiving positive feedback, respond with reinforcing or coaching feedback to the sender.…
