- I hate to tell you, but you have to hear it. I had to hear it. A for effort is a thing of the past. Working harder doesn't necessarily mean you or your work is going to get noticed. This line of thinking is a common pitfall in talking about your work and is what I call the effort versus impact trap. In this lesson, we'll discuss the effort versus impact trap and how to reframe talking about your accomplishments to center on the impact you are making. Now, as a human task completion machine, this trap breaks my little heart because it's something I have fallen into in every single job I've ever had, but finally, after a long string of experiences that drove this point home the hard way, I learned that you've got to leave your A for effort back in the school yard and start talking about impact.
