- I want to focus on self control because leaders often face challenging situations and or people. In fact, many problems are the result of other people losing control. There are three keys to having emotional self control. The first is knowing how to manage your emotions. You have to be able to correctly identify your feelings, which is harder for some than others. Then you have to allow yourself to feel those feelings. And finally, find healthy ways to express them. There are no bad or wrong feelings, and it's important to get some skill at managing difficult emotions, like anger or sadness. The second key to emotional control is understanding what amygdala hijacks are. The amygdala is the brain structure responsible for the fight, flight, freeze response.
